Summer, 2001. It was hot hot. Everybody was outside or getting ready for Claremont Day. That day was crazy. Everybody was rolling deep with their friends. People were everywhere. They were on the courts, in the park, and in the project building. Me I had fun that day, well I think everyone had fun that day. Every thing was going well until shots rang out. Pop Pop Pop. Everybody was out of there. My friends De, Chris, and Jay got shot, and my other friend Truth was in jail. All there was were blood puddles on the sidewalk.
The next day everybody was talking about it. There had been a conflict. The conflict was between two guys I know. It was stupid though, because it was over a foul in a basketball game. It turned into an argument, then one of them made a smart remark that I didn’t hear and hell broke loose. Everybody laughed at the remark and my nigga Truth snapped. He said “Ya think that’s funny,” and my other friend Jay said, “Yeah I do.” So then Truth said, “Well I’ll show you funny,” and left. He went to go get his crew and five minutes later Truth came back with a group of people and a gun in his hand. All we heard after that was gunshots and sirens and I also saw people screaming and running. Everybody was out of there. That night I couldn’t sleep, all I could think about was what happened that day, it was crazy.
The next day, everybody was talking about what happened the previous day on the block. News came in that Jay was in critical condition and Truth was in jail. News also came in that my other two friends that got shot, De and Chris, were okay and were ready to come home.
Well I finally got the “Claremont Day Massacre” off my mind and De and Chris came home. Jay finally came home but was paralyzed from the waist down. Truth was sentenced for twenty years and without parole before serving ten. The next two Claremont Days went well and no one got into a conflict with anybody. So I guess no one wanted to repeat what happened in 2001.
